Conceptualizing Travel in an Age of Globalization: Toward an Inclusive Approach

This talk develops the concept of travel as a genus of human mobility encompassing a range of activities—tourism, pilgrimage, labor migration, conquest, etc.—that are typically treated as separate analytical categories. It argues that these categories historically have more in common than we tend to think, and considers how a more inclusive approach to travel can enhance our understanding of globalization.

Sasha D. Pack is Professor of History at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he writes and teaches about modern Spanish, European, and World History. His most recent book is The Deepest Border: The Strait of Gibraltar and the Making of the Modern Hispano-African Borderland (Stanford University Press, 2019).
